-It is a representation of the Earth's surface or its part on a flat surface according to a scale.Maps are useful for various purposes.A map shows a large area on a small Scale.
*What is difference between Political Maps and Thematic Maps?
-Political Maps:Maps depicting,boundaries of countries,states,district etc ,are political maps
-Thematic Maps:Map representing a particular topic or theme is known as thematic map like rainfall,distribution of minerals etc.
*What is Physical Relief Maps?
-Map depicting physical features like mountains,plateaus and plains are known as physical maps.
*What is Sketch?
-It is an Imaginary and rough drawing without measuring actual distances.
*What is Plan?
-It is a large scale drawing which shows greater details.It shows a small area on a large scale.

-Ratio between the distance of two points on the paper and the actual distance of these points on the ground is termed as scale.
*What is Cardinal Points?
-The four major directions such as,North,South,East and West are termed as Cardinal points.
*What is difference between Directions and Intermediate Directions?
-DIRECTIONS:Four cardinal points-North,South,East and West called Directions.
-INTERMEDIATE DIRECTIONS:
The directions lying exactly between N-E,E-S,S-W and W-N are termed as intermediate directions.

-SMALL SCALE MAP:
Small scale map is that map which is drawn on small scale like 1:25,00,000
Examples:Map of continents,countries etc.
-LARGE SCALE MAP:
Large scale map is that map which is drawn on large scale like 1:2,000 .Example:plans or Map of a school etc.
*What is Globe?
-It is a model of the EarthDistances and directions are correctly shown on a globe.However,landforms,roads,railways,towns and villages etc,cannot be shown on a globe properly.

-Cartography is the science of Map-Making
