The Reason Behind the Name Pattomthara
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Kodumon is a small town in Pathanamthitta District, Kerala. Even now, old people call Kodumon "Pattomthara." The place name Pattomthara originated from the fact that a large number of Tamil Brahmins lived here. Tamil Brahmins are known as "Pattar" in colloquial language. They are also known as Iyers. Later, the majority of Tamil Brahmins relocated from here to near the Padmanabhaswami Temple in Thiruvananthapuram. Malayala Brahmins (Potti) still live in large numbers in Kodumon Panchayat.
* Why did Tamil Brahmins leave Kodumon?
According to historical records and local accounts, many Tamil Brahmins left Kodumon and other parts of Pathanamthitta district to settle in Thiruvananthapuram, particularly around the Padmanabhaswamy Temple, for several reasons:
(a) Temple Duties
-------------------------------------------
Tamil Brahmins have a close relationship with the Padmanabhaswamy Temple. So, many of them moved to Thiruvananthapuram.
(b) Economic Opportunities
---------------------------------------------
Thiruvananthapuram, being the capital city of Travancore (and later Kerala), offered better economic prospects, education, and career opportunities, attracting many Tamil Brahmins.
(c) Cultural and Social Ties
----------------------------------------------
Tamil Brahmins had strong cultural and social connections with the royal family of Travancore, who were also Tamil-speaking. This affinity facilitated their settlement in Thiruvananthapuram.
These factors, combined with the natural allure of the temple city, led many Tamil Brahmins to leave Kodumon and settle in Thiruvananthapuram.
